A lighter version of the Outback-style blooming onion, made crispy in the air fryer with a simple bloom sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp horseradish
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Cut the top off the onion and peel it. Make vertical cuts down the onion, leaving the root intact.
  2. Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl. In another bowl, beat the eggs.
  3. Dip the onion in the flour mixture, then the eggs, then the panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F. Place the onion in the air fryer basket and spray lightly with oil.
  5. Cook for 12-15 minutes until golden and crispy.
  6. Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, and smoked paprika to make the bloom sauce. Serve with the onion.

Notes

  • Use a sharp knife for clean cuts on the onion.
  • Spraying the breaded onion with oil helps it crisp up.
