Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt.
Add the cold butter pieces to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry blender, your fingers, or a fork to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
Let the apple crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Apple crisp can be made ahead and reheated. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until heated through.
To freeze, cool completely, cover tightly with plastic wrap and then foil, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
