A rich, moist chocolate cake made without dairy or eggs, perfect for birthdays or Veganuary.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Add water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour batter into the pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  5. Let cool before frosting.

Notes

  • Replace oil with applesauce for a lower-fat version.
  • Use almond milk instead of water for extra richness.
  • Top with vegan ganache or powdered sugar.
