Learn to make a perfect, golden-brown grilled cheese sandwich with gooey, melted cheese inside. This recipe focuses on the simple, comforting classic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices white bread
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Top with the cheese slices.
  4. Place the other slice of bread on top, butter-side up.
  5. Cook for 3-5 minutes, until the bottom slice is golden brown.
  6. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook for another 3-5 minutes, until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  7. Remove from skillet and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, you can spread mayonnaise on the outside of the bread instead of butter.
  • If your cheese isn’t melting well, you can cover the skillet for a minute or two to trap heat.
  • Use a medium-low heat to ensure the bread toasts evenly without burning before the cheese melts.
