Learn how to make fresh, vibrant guacamole from scratch. This easy recipe is perfect for gatherings and features ripe avocados, lime, and your favorite mix-ins.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 12 serrano or jalapeño peppers, finely minced (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup diced tomato

Instructions

  1. Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
  2. Mash the avocado with a fork until it reaches your desired consistency (chunky or smooth).
  3. Add the chopped red onion, minced peppers, cilantro, lime juice, and salt to the bowl.
  4. If using, gently stir in the diced tomato.
  5. Mix everything together until well combined.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or lime juice if needed.
  7. Serve immediately with tortilla chips.

Notes

  • To keep guacamole green for a short time, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole, ensuring no air pockets. You can also place an avocado pit in the center, though its effectiveness is debated.
  • Use only ripe avocados for the best flavor and texture. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure.
  • This recipe is a base; feel free to customize with garlic, cumin, or other spices.
