Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the hot water and whisk until a smooth paste forms. This prevents clumps.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk.
  4. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it is hot and steaming but not boiling.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Pour into mugs and add your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For an extra rich hot chocolate, use half milk and half heavy cream.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or a drop of peppermint extract for a flavor variation.
  • This recipe is easily scalable for larger batches.
