Make golden, crispy mozzarella sticks with a gooey, stretchy cheese center. This easy appetizer recipe is perfect for impressing guests or serving as a kid-friendly snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 1/2-inch thick sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Marinara sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the mozzarella sticks dry with paper towels.
  2. Set up three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, oregano, and pepper.
  3. Dredge each mozzarella stick first in the flour, shaking off excess.
  4. Dip the floured stick into the beaten eggs, ensuring it’s fully coated.
  5. Roll the egg-coated stick in the seasoned panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Place breaded sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes to help them hold their shape during frying.
  6. Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully add a few frozen mozzarella sticks to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.
  8. Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the fried mozzarella sticks with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.
  10. Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure the mozzarella is fresh and not low-moisture.
  • Freezing the breaded sticks before frying is crucial for preventing the cheese from leaking out.
  • If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the oil by dropping a breadcrumb in; it should sizzle immediately.
  • Serve these as a delicious appetizer or snack. Consider them a great addition to your meal planning for parties.
