Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, optional
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, sliced, optional

Instructions

  1. Combine apple cider, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, and optional brown sugar and ginger in a large pot or slow cooker.
  2. If using a pot, bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Do not boil.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to allow flavors to meld.
  4. If using a slow cooker, set to low and cook for 2-4 hours.
  5. Strain out the spices and fruit before serving, or serve with a ladle and let guests avoid them.
  6. Serve hot in mugs.

Notes

  • For a stronger spice flavor, you can tie the spices in a cheesecloth bag before adding them to the cider.
  • Keep warm in a slow cooker for easy serving at parties.
  • Adjust sweetness to your preference; apple cider varies in natural sweetness.
