Bake adorable, mummy-shaped hand pies filled with spiced apples for a festive Halloween treat. These mini pastries are easy to assemble and fun to decorate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 3 medium)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Candy eyes or small white icing dots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Add the sugar mixture to the apples and toss to coat evenly.
  5. Unroll the pie crusts onto a lightly floured surface. Cut out 12 circles using a 4-inch round cutter.
  6. Place about 2 tablespoons of the apple filling onto one half of each pie crust circle, leaving a small border.
  7. Brush the edges of the crust with the egg wash (egg beaten with milk).
  8. Cut thin strips from the remaining pie crust dough to create mummy bandages. Drape the strips over the filling, leaving a small gap for the eyes. You can also use a fork to crimp the edges of the hand pies.
  9. Place the hand pies on the prepared baking sheets.
  10. Brush the tops of the hand pies with the remaining egg wash.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  12. Remove from oven and let cool slightly on the baking sheets before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. Once cooled, attach candy eyes or use small dots of white icing to create the mummy eyes in the gaps you left.

Notes

  • For a shinier crust, you can add a pinch of sugar to the egg wash.
  • If you don’t have candy eyes, you can use small white icing dots with a tiny black dot in the center for the eyes.
  • Ensure the apple slices are thin enough to cook through easily within the hand pie.
